Applications & Uses
Law Enforcement
Police forces and members of the public can use infrared photography for crime prevention and security purposes. Because infrared cameras have the capability to record in complete darkness, they are very useful for surveillance purposes. A homeowner or police officer could easily set up an infrared light source to illuminate an area invisibly, except of course to an infrared camera which picks up infrared light. This would allow them to record a crime in progress without the perpetrator ever knowing that the camera (or infrared light source) existed, even if it was completely dark at the time. In fact, many modern CCTV cameras now have a ring of infrared LEDs built in to help illuminate the scene at night.
Police forces also often use infrared flash with infrared sensitive speeding cameras, meaning that motorists don’t know if they’ve been caught speeding until they receive a penalty fine in the mail.
