Tried using my Nikon D7100, unconverted, for infrared. Interesting, but the image quality left much to be desired. After reading the literature on Life Pixel’s web site, decided to go Full Spectrum for my Sony a6300. Became a big fan of IR until the camera died. Full Spectrum is for the following customers: a) Want to shoot at different wave lengths (e.g. 720nm & 830nm IR, visible light, ultraviolet) w. the same camera. b) Have lenses that are visible light & IR friendly (worst part of the experience: Sony 10-18, Zeiss Loxia 25mm, Zeiss Loxia 85mm, and Voigtland 110mm macro were bad news. But discovered that the Tamron 70-180 & 28-200 were great). Best scenario for Full Spectrum, is you start shooting in the morning w. lots of clouds; great lighting. Clouds dissipate, and it’s cloudless … ideal for IR shooting. You start w. a hot mirror filter, and replace it with a 720nm filter when it becomes sunny. Your lenses must of the type that accept screw-in filters, because you won’t be able to shoot wo. a filter on; forget the 2 Sony 12-24 lenses. After all of this, when the converted a6300 died, have elected for a new a7 iii with a 830nm conversion; a new unconverted a6400 will inherit the bad IR lenses. Life Pixel’s service is excellent, and they have been very responsive to my questions. (Heck, I ordered a 2nd conversion from them.)

I had my Sony A6000 converted to full spectrum at the end of May and I am very happy with. It has nice image quality, and the ability to use different infrared, UV or hot mirror external filters not the lenses gives me flexible when shooting. The service was fast and the workmanship of good quality. The camera works great and I have spent the last two weeks testing out the various infrared filters. I truly love using the Super Blue that I purchased with the conversion. Great Job Lifepixel!

After several phone conversations with Daniel, I decided to convert my Sony a6300 to full spectrum, thus providing me with the flexibility to experiment with several infrared wavelengths (590, 720, 830). I also purchased the Full Spectrum Clear filter which “returns” the a6300 to an unmodified camera for those times I just want to take a photograph. I am REALLY pleased with the results. After taking advantage of LifePixels free, half-hour, “live” Internet training session, I signed up for a three-day workshop with Dan Wampler to learn how to get it right from the start. Two days of shooting and one day of intense Ps processing with Dan not only improved my image acquisition but also provided me with the confidence (I’m a Lr user and new to Ps) to process those files into stunning images. With LifePixel it doesn’t stop with the camera conversion – it carries on to help you become comfortable and proficient taking, processing and printing IR images. Can’t wait for the Nikon mirrorless to come out next year – it’s going straight to LifePixel!

I have been missing infrared shooting ever since I stopped using film cameras. I sent a new Sony a6300 to LifePixel and now I am in love with infrared all over again! This camera is perfect for shooting IR, with the live viewfinder and easy white balance settings, plus the focus is automatic on the IR wavelength so no guessing!
