Hi, my name is Chad Gordon. I am a creative director/designer and fine art landscape photographer based near Cleveland, Ohio.
I was born into a family of artists. My father is a retired photojournalist, my mother is an active ceramicist and my grandfather was an accomplished painter and illustrator. My work is a culmination of my creative upbringing, my design background, and my love of nature.
I fell in love with infrared photography over 30 years ago – beginning with Kodak HIE film in college and transitioning to digital later on in life (Thank you LifePixel!). In fact, I do not shoot any of my fine art landscape work in anything but infrared. It is not my intention to document nature accurately. The world is full of amazing visible light photographers as it is. My goal is simply to escape, explore and create. My work is more a deeply internal exploration than anything else; how I think, how I feel and what I see in my dreams.
The difficulty of infrared is a challenge that I love. Even after so many years of working with it, I’m never quite sure what I’m going to get. It requires the photographer to slow down and think differently. Escape (even get lost) – just as one would in the woods – or in our imaginations.
I’ve been asked if I’ve composited some of my images. While I am not against it, all of my work to date consists of single captures.
I graduated in 1991 from Ohio University with a BFA in photographic illustration with a minor in graphic design. I also studied at the Scotland Field School in Documentary Photojournalism (an Ohio University study-abroad program).
