What a wonderful gesture by LifePixel: they offer a 30 minute one-on-one session with Dan Wampler after you have had your camera converted. During the session you can ask anything you like about your modified camera, how to shoot and post-process infrared pictures. My session today was over before I knew it, we touched on many topics (setting white balance in the field, how to judge your exposure, bracketing, time of day to shoot, specifics in post-processing, and so on. Dan is a pleasant person, gives a lot of good pointers and has some interesting stuff to show. This session was a real surprise to me, and a well-appreciated bonus.
I am a moderately experienced amateur nature photographer who’s been interested in IR photography for some time. I had been aware of the LifePixel service and their terrific reviews, so I had no doubt that they would be the one to convert my Nikon D300. I chose the SuperColor conversion since I love the images that can be produced with appropriate post-production in Photoshop. What I didn’t know beforehand was that they not only performed the conversion seamlessly and perfectly (along with autofocus calibration to my old Nikkor 18-200mm zoom), but that they also provided a free 30-min tutorial on IR. Dan Wampler did my tutorial and he was excellent. Very friendly and helpful! As I do more shooting, I will probably sign up for additional tutorials to hone my skills. All in all, I highly recommend the LifePixel conversion service and Dan Wampler for help in learning how to use your new IR-converted camera to best advantage.
