I am very excited to tell you about a new product Life Pixel is carrying, Magnetic Infrared Filters.
Now I know magnetic filters are not something new, the idea has been around for a while. The reason I’m excited is that Life Pixel has learned from the other magnetic filters and has a product you’re going to love. If you’ve never used magnetic filters, they are brilliant. You simply place the filter on the front of the lens and it stays magnetically attached to the lens. Changing filters is a snap, just pull one off and stick another in its place. You buy one set of filters for your biggest-diameter lens and then use set-down rings for your smaller-diameter lenses.
I’ve been using magnetic filters for a few years, I purchased a set of magnetic rings from a now-defunct system that allowed me to use my Life Pixel filters with a magnetic attachment. They worked, sort of. They had a ring that fits on the lens and one for the filter. They had a few problems though. First, their magnetic system was not strong enough and if you jostled your camera too much it could fall off. Second, it came with a lens cap, but you could only use it with the filter off. Third, and this was a biggie, the combination of the filter ring and the lens receiver added too much width. For example, when I use my 77mm filters with my Canon RF 16mm I needed a 77mm-43mm step-down ring. Because of the extra thickness, many of my images had a light halo in the center of the image.
All that has changed with the Life Pixel Magnetic Filters.
First, the filters are slim, and the magnetic ring is built into the filter. The filter itself is fully anti-reflection multicoated on both sides to minimize reflections, and the surface is hydrophobic, scratch and dust-resistant making it very easy to clean. The lens receiver ring is also very thin.
Second, the magnetic system built into the filters is very strong. I tried to shake loose a filter deliberately and could not get it to come off.
Third, The lens cap works with a filter on or off, and it is a super light aerospace-grade aluminum alloy with a soft inner coating to protect your lens and filter.
Here’s one more thing to note; I have several other magnetic filters and the Life Pixel filter allowed the other filter to stack and attach seamlessly.
As a full spectrum shooter, the Life Pixel Magnetic Filters are going to make my life so much easier.
